    Why We Worship

    What come to mind when you think of worship?

    What does worship mean?

    God designed us for worship.

    Psalm 92:1,2,5

    It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
        to sing praises to your name, O Most High;
    to declare your steadfast love in the morning,
        and your faithfulness by night,

    How great are your works, O Lord!

    Psalm 96

    Oh sing to the Lord a new song;
        sing to the Lord, all the earth!
    Sing to the Lord, bless his name;
        tell of his salvation from day to day.
    Declare his glory among the nations,
        his marvelous works among all the peoples!
    For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;

    Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples,
        ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!
    Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
        bring an offering, and come into his courts!
    Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness;
        tremble before him, all the earth!

    Psalm 100

    Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!
        Serve the Lord with gladness!
        Come into his presence with singing!

    Know that the Lord, he is God!
        It is he who made us, and we are his;
        we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

    Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
        and his courts with praise!
        Give thanks to him; bless his name!

    For the Lord is good;
        his steadfast love endures forever,
        and his faithfulness to all generations.

    Worship means respectful devotion—loving, honoring, and obeying someone who deserves our highest regard.
    Worshipping God means acknowledging and celebrating His power and perfection in gratitude.
    Worship includes understanding and reverent awe of God’s Holiness; we remember how great He is and how unworthy/unholy we are. We come to Him with a humble heart recognizing our place His Holy Presence.
    Worship is loving, serving, and caring for people to point glory back to Jesus.

    HOW ARE WE TO WORSHIP?

    John 4 worship in spirit and truth”

    Worship in spirit.

    We must worship from the core of our bring.  Not just superficial motions.

    Worship according to the truth.

    John 1:14; 14:6

    John 1:18

    Heb. 1:1–3

    Thus, to worship in truth means to worship in accordance with the truth of and about Jesus — that He is the Son of God, the Messiah, and the only Savior of sinners.

    If we don’t know God’s truth, how can we believe in our spirit.  How then can we truly worship Him?

    When we say that we are to “worship in spirit and in truth,” we are saying that in public, family, private, and all of life we are to glorify and enjoy God.

    HOW DOES WORSHIP FIT INTO OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD?

    Worship is a key part of our relationship with God.

    When we worship God, we actively recognize Him as our Creator, Savior, Sustainer, and King.

    Exodus 20:2-6

    I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land ofEgypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anythingthat is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waterunder the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them,...h“You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. i“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

    Worship is how we tell God that we love Him.

    John 14:15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

    Worship is our “reasonable service” of gratitude for all God has done for us.

    Romans 12:1I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

    Worship is a way to spread the Gospel message to non-believers.

    Matthew 5:16 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

    We are to point people to God, sharing the hope and joy that is within us.

    As we live out this relationship with God through our worship of Him, the Bible teachesthat worship is both a specific activity and a way of life.

    A way of Life: its not only an activity.  It is an every moment part of your life.

    Jonah 1:9

    1 Cor. 10:31

    A set apart actions, specific activity:

    public worship, private worship, and family worship

    Family worship is designed to be led heads of families, with a view to establishing God-centered homes, promoting worship in all of life in all the members of the household, and in preparation for public worship.

    Deut. 6:6–8  And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. Youshall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when yousit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down,and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and theyshall be as frontlets between your eyes.

    Josh. 24:15 But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

    Private worship is just you and God

    Matthew 6:6 But when you pray, zgo into your room and shut the door and pray to yourFather who is in secret. aAnd your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

    Spending focused time with God, not about showing off to others.

    Jesus led by example:

    Luke 5:16 16 But He would withdraw to desolate places and pray.

    Desolate meaning places without distractions.

    Mark 1:35 And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, H[Jesus] departed and went out to a solitary place, and there he prayed.

    David spoke of it Psalm 5:3. Daniel in Daniel 6:10, and Peter in Acts 10:9

    God wants us to set aside specific time, without other distractions so we can concentrate on our relationship with God and hearing from Him.

    Public worship assemble to give to the Lord the glory due His name and enjoying the joy of His promised special presence with His own people.

     Psalm 100:2 (Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth!

    2  Serve the LORD with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!

    Hebrews10:23-25  Let us hold fast the confession of our hope withoutwavering, for He who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how to stir upone another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is thehabit of some, but encouraging one another

    Exodus 20

    I am the LORD your God,

    You shall have no other gods before me.

    You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anythingthat is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waterunder the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them,...

    h“You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD willnot hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

    i“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

    Isaiah 42:8  I am the LORD; that is my name; my glory I give to no othernor my praise to carved idols.

    God takes our worship of Him seriously.

    Have you been intentional in your worship?
