The Tower of Babel
by Pastor Chip Dean
Genesis 11:1-9
1. THE PROBLEM OF SIN IN US
Genesis 11:1-4
Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.”
Psalm 115:1
Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory.
Philippians 2:9
Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
A church that honors God is a church that God honors.
A life that honors God is a life that God honors.
2. THE PURSUIT OF GOD FOR US
Genesis 11:5-7
And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built. And the Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another’s speech.”
Romans 5:6
For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
3. THE PURPOSE OF THE GOSPEL THROUGH US
Genesis 11:8-9
So the Lord dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth. And from there the Lord dispersed them over the face of all the earth.
What to do when we scatter:
1. Namedrop Jesus.
2. Serve in some way.
3. Tell your story.
4. Tell the Gospel story.
Revelation 5:9
After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”
