How to Interpret God's Laws

by Pastor Chip Dean

1. The Law and the Old Testament

Leviticus 18:1-4

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, I am the Lord your God. 3You shall not do as they do in the land of Egypt, where you lived, and you shall not do as they do in the land of Canaan, to which I am bringing you. You shall not walk in their statutes. 4You shall follow my rules and keep my statutes and walk in them. I am the Lord your God. 5You shall therefore keep my statutes and my rules; if a person does them, he shall live by them: I am the Lord.

Leviticus 11:7

And the pig, because it parts the hoof and is coven-footed but does not chew the cud, is unclean to you.

Leviticus 11:9

These you may eat, of all that are in the waters. Everything in the waters that has fins and scales, whether in the seas or in the rivers, you may eat.

Leviticus 3:17

It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations, in all your dwelling places, that you eat neither fat nor blood.

Leviticus 19:19

Nor shall you wear a garment of cloth made of two kinds of material.

Exodus 23:19

You shall not boil a young goat in its mothers milk.

Different Kinds of Laws in Leviticus

Dietary (Leviticus 11)
Childbirth (Leviticus 12)
Skin Diseases (Leviticus 13-14)
Mildew (Leviticus 14)
Bodily Fluids (Leviticus 15)
Sexual Immorality (Leviticus 18)
Miscellaneous (Leviticus 19)
Child Sacrifice (Leviticus 20)
Priesthood (Leviticus 21)
Offerings (Leviticus 22)

The Purposes of the Law:

1. To save His people from sickness, disease, and death.
2. To keep His people from harming, hurting, or hating each other.
3. To set His people apart from the other nations.
4. To show His people their inability to obey the law.
5. To show His people their need for a perfect Savior.
Psalm 119:97

Oh how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day.

Jeremiah 31:33

For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Ezekiel 36:27

And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.

2. The Law and Jesus

Matthew 22:36-40

Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?37And he said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.

The 10 Commandments

1. Have no other gods before me.
2. You shall not make for yourself a carved image.
3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
5. Honor your father and your mother.
6. You shall not murder.
7. You shall not commit adultery.
8. You shall not steal.
9. You shall not bear false witness.
10. You shall not covet.

James 2:10

For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it.

Matthew 5:17

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.

2 Corinthians 5:21

For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

3. The Law and You

Romans 8:2

For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

John 14:15

If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

John 15:9-11

As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Fathers commandments and abide in his love. 11These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

Galatians 6:2

Bear one anothers burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

Matthew 28:19

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.
