God’s Oneness and Threeness

 

1. God is One

Views on God as One:

God is none
God is many
God is one

Scriptures on God as One:
Deuteronomy 6:4

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.

Ephesians 4:6

one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

Ephesians 4:5

One Lord, one faith, one baptism,

Ephesians 4:4

There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call. 

One God: God and Father, Lord, and Spirit
One Salvation: Call, Faith, and Hope
One Way: Baptism and Body

2. God is Three

Definition of the Trinity

Trinity means “Three in Oneness”
There is One God.
God is Three Distinct Persons
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
Each are Fully and Equally God 

Each Person of the Trinity is Fully God

The Father is God

Psalm 89:26

He shall cry to me, “You are my Father, my God, and the Rock of my salvation.”

The Son is God

John 1:1

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The Holy Spirit is God

2 Corinthians 3:18

And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord,[a] are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.[b] For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

There’s no good way to explain the Trinity because the Trinity is like nothing else! 

The Trinity Throughout the Scriptures:

Trinity in Creation
Genesis 1:1

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.3And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

Trinity in the Fall
Genesis 3:22

Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. (Also when God created humanity in HIs image and in the Tower of Babel)

Trinity in the Jesus’ Birth
Luke 1:35

And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. 

Trinity at Jesus’ Baptism
Matthew 3:16

And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Trinity in the Great Commission
Matthew 28:19

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,20teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Trinity in Eternity
Revelation 21:9-10

“Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.” 10And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God.
