Rebelling to Repenting (Numbers 21:4-9)

1. THE REBELLION OF THE PEOPLE

Numbers 21:4-5

From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom.

Galatians 6:9

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.

Psalm 62:1

“For God alone my soul waits in silence; from Him comes my salvation.”

Numbers 21:5

And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.” - This can be on a slide by itself. “When a person’s heart is intent on rebellion and beset with discontentment, even the best gifts from the Lord can lose their flavor; nothing will fully satisfy until the heart is made right.”

2. THE JUDGMENT OF GOD

Numbers 21:6

Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died.

1 Corinthians 10:9

We must not put Christ o the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents.

Romans 6:23

The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus our Lord

3. THE REPENTANCE OF THE PEOPLE

Numbers 21:7

And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.

4. THE SALVATION OF GOD

Numbers 21:8

And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.” 9 So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.

Galatians 3:13

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”

John 3:14-16

And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
